Drupalscope was an app and event experience created for Drupalcon 2023 for Bounteous. The app itself is a brief, customizable questionnaire that uses ChatGPT to generate a unique “horoscope” inspired reading without gathering any personal identity information. The brief asked for a flashy design to draw attention and get attendees talking about Bounteous and the experience.
Considerations: While the name denotes inspiration in horoscopes and the zodiac, the design deliverables needed to maintain a politically correct, religious and spirituality-free message. The target audience was tech professionals and developers.
Multiple Animations
To bring the experience together, multiple animations were created for the app, including a simple processing or loading animation between questions, the main home screen animation, and the generating animation while the output was loading.
On the home screen, the Drupal drop at the center of the main mark completed a series of random movements when inactive. It was animated to move around the containment shape slowly, glitch out and reappear, and turn into an ominous all seeing eye.
Insights: Leaning into cheesy even sometimes corny representation, I proposed a very extra logo, with busy details and tons of movement throughout the app. I took inspiration from steam-punk designs, conspiracy theories, and some minor zodiac elements with the stars and the moon.. The final designs are full of small easter eggs. The main mark has coding brackets, the background of the app is binary code for “innovation”, and portions of the mark are meant to look like an all-seeing eye.
The Result: An edgy event stand out so good that it was given a facelift for another event. Check out the video from the event here.
